AN OUTLINE OF UKRAINIAN NEEDLEWORK FOR THE MODERN MISS AND MRS. Satin Stitch The first s'titdh in Ukraine was the weaving one and it was pre sented to you in the last two is sues of “Our Life”. There you read that three sections o'f Uk raine did much with it namely, Polissya (N.W. Ukraine), Podo- lia (below that) and Kiev (Cent ral Ukraine). Of iCO'Unse there were others but the above are three good ones with which to start. The second or next to tihe oldest stiltch in Ukraine is the sa tin and to think of it usually means to think of the lands along the Dnipro River, and its tributa ries beaau.se of tihe extent to which it was and is working there as well as because of the excel lence of the designs. It is allways interesting to note the differences between, or the advantages and disadvantages of, a preceding abject ond a succeed ing one. In the case of the weav ing and satin stitches it is imper ative because both present the same general appearance in front. “Wihy then,” you may ask if just a casual reader and not an em broiderer, “should the just tech nique have not been retained if it was satisfying, instead of being replaced by another that gave an effect like it?” The answer to that question wall be obvious to you if you embroider the graph-pictur ed design on this page; the sat in stiiitc'h caught favor because it gave depth to embroidery through shaded effects by permit ting threads to be laid in different directions in one design. It im proved upon a basic quality of its predecessor, the weaving stitch, i.e. the smooth look that today is called the “satin finish.” Ann Strykowsky I enjoy reading OUR LIFE more than ever, now that it is in magazine form. I certainly appreciate all the extra time and hard work that it now requires from our ladies.
