AN OUTLINE OF UKRAINIAN EMBROIDERY FOR THE MODERN MISS AND MRS. The Cross Stitc'h is tlhe most popular stitch in Ukraine today. It has replaced all other stitches to such an extent that needle work l'overis are seriously con cerned and are trying to revive interest in other ways of em broidering'. But the crass stitch is still going strong and can be found in all parts of Ukraine: in some parts it is still in the. pro cess of replacing a stitch, while in others it has already done so. The Crosis Sti'tch probably came to Ukraine through Germany and lends itself easily to plant forms. In fact, many people picture Uk rainian embroidery to consist of ros.es or otlher flowers worked in tlhe cross stitch. Pictured here is one of these designs. It is from the arm-foand section o a peasant woman's sleeve. The rows of flowers arc repeated more times than is shown here and are very attractive. The colors are red and black. If you. are interested in the exact origin of the design, it is: th village of Dobrivlan, the dis trict of Drohohitclh, and the sec tion of Ukraine called Galicia. Educational Committee The Ukrainian mother who emigrated to foreign country, has a great responsibility in maintaining successfully the family li'fe in new surroundings and under new conditions. Sihe has many and varied tasks to perform. For the most part she is employed in a factory, and when at home she must take care of it as a horne- k'eeper, as wife, mother and educator of her chil dren. All these tasks cannot be executed satisfac torily, hence the E.C. is trying to- remedy her pro blem.s, through instruction, creating kinderagrtens, nurseries and children’s libraries. In 1950 WF'UWO has joined the International Mother’s League (MMM), with headquarters in Paris. The E.C. took over the tasiks of the Ukrain ian Branch of MMM, which is conducting inqui'ry into the difficult conditions of women in Ukraine. The next Congress of MMM will xbe held in 1953 with the slogan “The role of the mother as ed ucator”, for which the E.C. is preparing the mat erial.
