World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) The people of Ukraine are at the present time under a heavy yoke of Russian communist tyranny. The incessant struggle against the occupant has cost the Ukrainian people many thousands of lives. The life of Ukrainian women has become very hard and unbearable because of strained work and under nourishment, dispersing or vanishing of members of families as well as on account of inter ference by the government in rearing and educat ing of the children. The Ukrainian womanhood behinid the Iron Curtain is deprived of their right of defense. A large number of Ukrainian women escaped from Soviet slavery to American, British and French zones in Germany and Austria. They have formed there a n-ew organization, the Ukrainian Women’s Association, in order to proceed with social work among our women in DP camps, as well as to inform the western world about actual stimulation of Ukrainian women in their native coun try. In particular they labored to inform the West about the danger of bolshevism which lies griev ously upon the lot of Ukraine and is endangering tlhe whole world. One of its first objectives hais been to achieve contacts with Ukrainian immigrants in United States, Canada and South America. In these coun tries of the Western Hemisphere where the Uk rainians have settled since 1890, or earlder, are Uk rainian women’s organizations of long standing. They sihowied instantly their sincere willingness to assist the Ukrainian DP’s in their dire need. The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc., took the initiative in calling in 1948 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the World Con gress of Ukrainian Women which had been a manifestation of Ukrainian organized women the world over for Ukrainian freedom and democracy, and for independence of Ukraine, on one side, and against the communist terroristic regime in Uk raine, on the other side. This congress proved that there its a desire and necessity to form a world wide organization of Ukrainian women and to create a center for it, the more so as the Ukrainian women had been at that time starting on their farther migration to many new countries of the world. Thus the Congress resulted in forming the World Federation of Uk rainian Women Organizations. These are the objectives of WFUWO: 1—To coordinate the work of all Ukrainian cen tral' women’s organizations. 2—To represent the Ukrainian organized wom anhood. Central Ukrainian women’s organizationis which firmly stand for genuine democratic proinciples and Christian ethics, may become members of WFUWO. The activities comprise all sectors of social life. The department of public relations is giving special heed to relations with international women’s or ganizations and is operating in close cooperation with our political-social center. The cultural-educa tional department ^ is sending out to its members educational material. It is likewise looking after the publicity for WFUWO, and has its section in the magazine “Our Life.” The department of folk arts in cultivating appreciation for it. The following central Ukrainian women’s organi zations are now members of WFUWO: 1. Ukrainian National Women’s League of Amer ica, Inc. 2. Ukrainian Gold Cross in America. 3. Ukrainian Women’s Association in Argentina. 4. Ukrainian Women’s Association in Australia. 5. Ukrainian Women’s Association in Belgium. 6. Ukranian Women’s Association in England. 7. Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada. 8. Ukrainian Women’s Association in Germany. 9. Ukrainian Women’s Association in Venezuela. STANDING COMMITTEES: The Mother and Child Committee In the camps in Germany and Austria a large number of widows wfth their children was found, who had been given up by resettlement commis sions as unfit for work. The the World Federation of Ukr. Women’s Organizations formed a special committee to survey the situation. After collecting some funds in the United States, the Committee has arranged for transportation of approximately SO widows with their children, established a tran sient centre for them in Phila. and placed them all in positions in Phila. or elsewhere. The Ukrainian women’s organizations, through their central World Federation, were the о-nly ones among all nationalities that embarked on such a plan for widow з and children. After termination of this work the Committee sitill continues their activities by aiding the sick and aged women and their children who cannot emigrate to United States, Canada, or other countries.
