NON-UKRAINIANS EAGER TO LEARN ART OF “PYSANKY” (Cleveland, Ohio) Two very surprised women in Cleveland are Mrs. Harry Ste- panek, President of Branch 14, and Mrs. Michael Bilecky, a member of Soyuz Ukrainok. Following ia routine announce ment in Clefc^eland newspapers concerning the classes they were holding at the West Side and East Side Ukrainian National Homes, they were avalanched with telephone, calls of inquiry about their Ukrainian egg de signing instructions. Housewives and school teachers of "all na tionalities were eager to attend the classes and to learn the in tricacies of our pysanky. Their amazement turned into, excitement when each discovered there were over a hundred peo ple at each of the National Homes waiting to be shown how a Ukrainian egg is designed. Both Mrs. Stepanek and Mrs. Bilecky agreed that the majority of the women in the audiences were non-Ukrainians. And as they spoke with the women they learned that Germans, Russians, Poles, and Czechoslovaks were in attendance. In fact, the two classes thus held caused such an, uproar that two newspapers in Cleveland featured stories on Mrs. Stepa- цек and Mrs. Bilecky. Here, is a ripe field for a So yuz Ukrainok project on suc ceeding Easters. When non-Uk- rainians require such little en couragement ,it would seem to. be relativel yeasy to spread our culture. The Ukrainian Dancers’ Guild, under the direction of Nicholas Boyko, won round after round of overwhelming applause from the vast crowds that attended this three day affair. Under the direction of the Ukrainian Youth League of Ohio financial aid was given to Jr. League Branch 60 and Br. 30 of Soyuz Ukrainok, various Cleveland Organizations and the Cleveland Association of Christians and Jews, making it possible for this group* to travel to St. Louis to represent Ukrain ian culture. The smiles and greetings given to the delegates of the UNESCO conference were* eloquent testis mony of the friendship and fel lowship of one world. As the delegates came down the stairs they were greeted by a group symbolizing the United States of America—they were Martha and George Washington, an In dian Chief, Miss Liberty and Uncle Sam. Around the picture made by this group of early Americans moved the represen tatives in costumes. The Ukrainians added much color to this big tea party in the Exhibition Hall of the Public Auditorium.
