HELEN MURAL, Junior Vice-President UNWLA, Contributing Editor, OUR LIFE Soyuz Ukrainok, mother organization of Ukrainian women Each year in May we set aside >one day to honor “mother.” All year long, fpr the most part, ,mom’s devotion and .sacrifices are taken, -for granted. Then on- ,a -sunny day in May, mom sud denly, .becomes the center of at tention. There ,are gifts, flowers, and .speeches. We are keenly aware of the....love, thoughtful-; ness, understanding and sacri fice- that for some reason always go hand in hand with the word “mom.” Just as we take for granted the untiring efforts of mother to bind the-family together in a harmonious tmit, so do we as sume nonchalantly the deeper meaning of the value of belong ing to a family of fine back ground, honor and character such as Soyuz Ukrainok repre sents. For Soyuz Ukrainok is truly a good mother of Ukrain ian women., just and loving; just and loving in the same sense as our mothers. Although we don’t express our appreciation overtly at all times to mother or to Soyuz Uk- raino-k, we are aware nonethe less of the role that each plays іа.оит lives. It is good, however, to set aside a specific time to meditate over our good fortune; to think and to recognize openly in order to, gain a deeper in sight- Striking parallels can be drawn between your mother, my mother and “our” Soyuz Ukrai nok. Since time .immemorial motherhood has exemplified de privation for. the happiness and- comfort materially and spiritual ly of the offspring. In. the san)e: wray Soyuz Ukrainok in her twenty-four years, existence in the United States has represent ed her family as a group of Uk rainian women primarily en grossed in heartfelt helpfulness. Just as mother’s first concern is the welfare of her family, so is Soyuz Ukrainok’s first concern the wrelfare of Ukrainians here; and abroad. The same pride that a mother feels forx a new born youngster was felt1 by Soyuz Ukrainok when she helped to give birth to the World Federation of Uk rainian Women’s Organizations through the World Congress held in Philadelphia. And so 011 down the line. Both mother and UWLA, hand in hand, both managing to get over the “tough” spots through co operation, give and take on a democratic basis. JR. Older members of Branch 56 have been teaching the younger members the art of Ukrainian embroidery during informal ses sions. The girls plan to start by using the cross-stitch merely as an accessory to a dress, blouse or tie for every-day attire. Their next step is to make blouses to be worn for identification pur poses when sponsoring dances or other affairs. Eventually they hope to master the art to the ex tent where they’ll be able to em broider their own complete Uk rainian -costumes.
