JR. LEAGUE REPORTS DETROIT, MICHIGAN Jr. Branch 61 was honored with the presence of Miss Helen Mural on February 19, 1949, at a tea held at the home of Mrs. Ann Pyndyk. She was introduc- en to our members by Mrs. Pauline Budzol, third Vice-Pres ident, who was also a guest. Miss Mural gave us an inter esting informal talk and a dis cussion followed which helped to clear up a few problems and created a better understanding of League functions. We all were so impressed with Miss Mural's talk and so glad that the Jr. Section returned to “Our Life”, and recognizing the financial need for the newspap er, we gathered donations to the sum of $16.50. Since most of our members are married, talks progressed from children, to husbands, to cooking, to sewing etc. As the saying goes, one word led to an other, and we finally came back to League affairs. The evening was climaxed with refreshments. Mrs. Pyndyk prepared a new tea which was very tasty (if you love tea, see recipe below). She served fresh strawberry pie with whipped cream, cherry-topped cream pie, cherry pie and tort cookies. Diets on the part of some mem bers were forgotten as the as sorted desserts gave way to temptation, and will power went out the window in favor of ex tremely high calories. Before the evening ended, we discovered that Mrs. Budzol had a birthday the next day, so at the stroke of twelve we sang “Happy Birthday” and “Mnoha- ya Lita.” We had such a gay party and everyone enjoyed themselves so PYSANKY (bontmued from i’age 5; There are many of our Amer ican Ukrainian boys who lament this almost extinct custom in the United States. Many go to church with a renewed fire of hope burning within, only to be disappointed once more when on Easter morning they return from church with not a single Ukrain ian egg. The boys seem to think that those of us Ukrainian girls who work hard and long to make pysanky devote so much of our time and energy to the task that we are unwilling to let these treasures lose our sight. ^ut just think, girls, what we w 11 gain from our loss! much that we hated to go home, but we had another 'busy da ahead of us. On the 20 a concert was held at the Ukrainian Home in Ham- tramck commemorating the 77th birthday of Lessya Ukrain- ka given by Branches 5, 31 and Jr. Branch 61. Miss Mural was guest speaker and again she “came up to bat” for American Ukrainian youth. We need more people like her. Too bad she wasn’t born twins. The finest lo cal talents participated and helped make the concert a huge success. The profit of $400.00 is going toward pulblishinlg Lessya Uk- rainka’s works in the English language. And to all tea lovers, here’s ready discovered it: the recipe, if you haven’t al- Parade Ski-Ball 4 tbs. black tea 4 tbs. whole cloves 1 tbs. allspice berries 8 cups brisk boiling water 8 cinnamon sticks Sugar and lemon Measure tea into teapot; add cloves and allspice berries. Pour in water. Let steep five minutes. Pour into cups holding cinna mon stick. Use sugar and lemon to taste. This makes eight gen erous servings. If this proves too strong for your taste, use smaller amount of cloves and allspice berries. Hope yo ulike it as much as we did. Signed Junior Br., Detroit. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS The annaul meeting of Branch 56 was held March 1, with elec tion of new officers the main at traction on the agenda. Here are the results: Ann Zelisko, President; Helen Brudny and Irene Mandjac, Vice Presidents; Stephanie Brudny, T reasurer; Stephany J endzio, Reporter. Helen and Irene will handle all social affairs—the girls are an ticipating a big year. AKRON, OHIO Plans are being formed for the annual “Parent Day Program” by the Akron Jr. League Branch 51 for May. Again this year the theme will not be revealed until the program is actually present ed. It will, however, definitely be on the humorous side. The girls themselves are once more writing, directing and pre senting this event and from all appearances, it looks as though they will live up to the reputa tion they have gained from past performance. This year the Jr. Leaguers are fortunate in hav ing Mrs. Helen Syroid not only to play the music for the “Par ent Day Program,” but also to accompany the girls on the piano when, they begin to sing their favorite Ukrainian songs that never fail to fill the halls of the International Center following the business portion of the mon thly gatherings. DETROIT, MICHIGAN The girls from the Olena Te- liha branch (58), concentrating on the cultural aspects of Uk rainian traditions, have found that the Ukrainian arts aren’t as easy as an innocent bystander might assume. The last project was designing “pysanky.” That the patterns the girls achieved may not resemble anything ever seen before is due to the fact that wax and pens have wills of their own. After several sessions in the basement of a member’s home the girls agreed that it was for tunate for the reputation of Uk rainian art that the noble at tempts were made “under ground.” But nothing swerves branch 58 from its determination to be useful citizens. The gals volunteered their services to- the National Crusade for Children and, when called, came down en masse took off their shoes sang Ukrainian songs and worked like a Ford production line They worked so well that the committee complimented them as being the best workers of all the volunteers besides being the most fun. CLEVELAND, OHIO At the February meeting, Br. 60 discovered that making a neat cross-stitch requires a powerful lot of concentration! Silence reigned as the girls diligently counted stitches. The gals were happy that they had finished their business meeting before Mrs. Emil Bilecky proceeded to instruct them. Plans are under way for a gigantic May dance, most of the proceeds going for worthy UNWLA causes. PHILADELPHIA, PENNA. We understand that Stephanie Wochok and Helen Streit have been selected as reporters for Branch 52. As yet w;e have not heard from them, but we are anticipating a lot of news from Br. 52 for the next edition. Branch 57 still remains silent. What gives, girls? BROOKLYN, N. Y. Brooklyn sneaked up on the editor. We apologize for not be ing aware of your existence. Please contact the editor at your earliest convenience as all of us would like to hear more about your group.
