ART EXHIBIT AT YOUTH CONVENTION A new note will be added to the exhibit of Ukrainian Folk Art to be presented at the coming Uk rainian Youth’s League Conven tion at Benjamin Franklin Ho tel in Philadelphia over the La bor Day week-end, announces Miss Mildred Milanowicz, direc tor of the exhibit. The excellent display of Ukrainian handcraft will be varied by the inclusion of a modern dining room furniture set, utilizing a traditional Hutzul style and design. The furniture was designed and -executed by Maria Chomyn, recently arrived from a D. P. camp, who has been teaching at St. Basil’s Girls' Academy at Fox Chase, Pa. Mrs. Chomyn • was the manager in charge of the handcraft division of the famous Ukrainian Narodne Mystetstvo Cooperative in Lviw. It was this Cooperative that sup plied the beautiful examples of Ukrainian peasant art such as embroidered linens from every Ukrainia district, costumes from various regions, ceramics, kylims (rugs), wood carvings and tiietal works, that were specially ex ecuted for the World's Fair in Chicago, and was purchased by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, in whose possession it still remains. The Women’s League has loaned the valuable collection to the Phila delphia Convention Committee for exhibit at the Youth’s League Convention. Mrs. Chomyn, who has design ed this Folk Art Exhibit, will in clude some of her own Ukrain ian handcraft to the collection. She plans to produce these ar ticles in this country soon, on a large scale through a cooperative enterprise similar to theyone she managed in Ukraine. In addition to the Folk Art, the exhibit will include paintings by two contemporary Ukrainian ar tists also recently arrived from D.P. camps. The works of Peter Andrusiw will include his most recent painting of a Hutzul wed ding. Bohdan Borzemsky will show some of his paintings that were included in his oneman s>how at Heideliberg, Germany, last winter. Also on display at the Conven tion Exhibit will be the latest English books on Ukraine as well as a large collection of contempo rary Ukrainian periodicals anc newspapers published in this country and in Europe. No democratic world will work as it should work until we recog nize that we can only enjoy any right so long as we are prepared to discharge its equivalent duty. Anthony Eden. Blessings are the dividends from work well done. Leonard Spangenberg. N£W BRANCH IN DETROIT A group of young girls in De troit with similar backgrounds, common interests, and boundless enthusiasm for all things trade- marked “Ukrainian,” decided to incorporate all these qualities in to a functioning organization. They dedicated their dub to a program of furthering their per sonal education in Ukrainian li terary and cultural fields (to in clude learning to do Ukrainian embroidery, egg designing, cook ing Ukrainian dishes, and general familiarization with Ukrainian traditions) in order to perpetuate our customs in this country. Since the mothers of the majori ty of girls were members of the U.N.W.L. (Branch 23), they en couraged their daughters to re quest membership in the U.N.W. L. as a junior branch. The splen did reputations of the U.N.W.L. in Detroit, attributable to the considerable time and effort ex pended by members of the local branches in social and humanita- rain work, was a good recom- mendatjjpn and the deciding fac tor. The group is now officially Junior Branch 58 of the U.N.W. L., taking the name of the Uk rainian poetess, Olena Teliha, for the club. The officers are: Olga Kachner, President; Elsie Koza- chenko-Buhay, Vice-President; Anne Sedorak, Secretary; Zenia Pankiw, Treasurer; Mary Kach ner, Historian. The new branch presented a tea to introduce their members to the members of other established branches. Branches 5, 16, 23, and 31 were represented at the social and, with the natural insight of mothers, anticipated the financial problems we would encounter and made generous contributions to the club treasury. Friday, August 8th, Branch 58 is sponsoring a Bingo Party. The entire proceeds of the affair will be used for the present project — that of embroidering^ cross-stitch designs on handkerchiefs and to wels to be sold at the World Market of the International In stitute in Detroit this November. The profits realized from the sales will cover the expenses in curred in sending packages to needy Ukrainian people abroad this winter. Junior Branch 58 is indebted to all those who, morally and finan cially, have encouraged the young group. O. Kachner, Pfesid'ent. Those who have stood out for t’he better and higher values in this world have always had to tread the rough way. There is al ways opposition from the selfish. George Matthew Adams. Better a friendly denial than unwilling compliance.
