EDITOR, MISS MILDRED MILANOWICZ— 151 Hopkins Avenue Jersey City 6, New Jersey Its the Little Things Labor Day. Back from the first real, honest-to-goodness vaca tion in years. We are all “rarin’ to go.” Ready with renewed strength and eagerness to begin the long list of exciting activities that mark Ukrainian-American life and start, in the American tradition, with Labor Day week-end. Many, of us have planned already to participate in one of the several post-war ‘firsts’ that will take place this week-end. A new, eager crop of young Ukrainian Americans will attend these Rallies, Conventions, etc. True, the first one or two affairs of the season will be more, or less occasions for new or reitewed acquaintances^ for -getting the lay of the land, -for orientating ourselves to our problems, to finding our future work. Consequently the serious strides won’t be under taken till a later date, and we may come home this Labor Day week end with remembrances of just a ‘howling good time/ Nevertheless, just beneath the; surface of all the bubbling laugh ter, .the high spirits and gayety that is present (as it always has beqn), at our Labor Day Youth Rallies and Conventions, our Socials, у q u,. will find the constant desire, (perhaps in too few, but it is there), to achieve something noteworthy, as a group, or as indi viduals. In some form -or other, many a one has been heard to say, “Gosh, if w:e could only do something BIG to put th^, Ukrainians on the map!” Haven't you heard it time andH^gamZ. Well, big things have been done* and they are well and good, and grand when .they dp-happen. Butr perhaps it’s the smaller things, leading eventually,to the BIG things that we should tackle right полу. We have .heard so much at past Rallies, Conventions, Forums, we were given so much information and we were truly inspired, but, honestly, have we Followed Through and, i^cppiplj.sh.ecl any of the things we are capable of accomplishing? True, Ukrainian American youth did accomplish much, things that/put t h e m 0J1 the: map’ — locally. And when one becomes dis couraged, one need only recall'the fine Sports Programs, the Chorus Competitions and Festivals, the livfcly^a-rid'^ Forums held in the past. We did accomplish a lot. But we still are not using all of our capacity and ability. There is so much to learn, so much to do, and so few that can rise- above the apathy and indifferences we find so prevalent among our young Ukrainian Americans. But jt may solve everything, if we start with those little things, then we can 1 feel'4 almost assured* that the big things will follow. A little thing — to hold a class in Ukrainian, just among your own close friends. There are plenty of teachers around. Make, it a point of pride and good breeding to know the language of your fa thers. Others will be eager to emulate you when they see your pride. Soon other classes may be formed, after church, at choir prac tice, after meetings. This is one of the little things that can lead to pleasure for yourself — when you discover the literary treasures Ukrainian writers offer. Pleasure to" your friends when you all en joy the sense of linguistic accomplishment, pleasure to the world when you can acquaint them with our literary gems — through your own translations, perhaps, who knosws? A little thing. A Ukrainian-English, or an English-Ukrainian I)ICTIONARY. Would you like one? A good one? Enough said? A little thing. Just being curious about anything Ukrainian. About Ukrainian history. Howr are Easter eggs made by Ukrainians ? What is the correct Ukrainian National Costume? Who was Lesya Ukrainka? Franko? Shevchenko? Who are our contemporary com posers, writers, artists ? W7hat is the proper sequence of steps in the “Kdzaehok”? Result ? Absorbing subjects taught in>numerous class es. And why not a complete Ukrainian course in every large area at -the local schools and universities? Two semesters, will barely squeeze in all subjects. A little thing. Giving a boost. Ukrainian: talent in any field needs a boost right now. A littl^thing. One scholarship. But that one may help someone put us ‘on-the Map/ A. 4ittle thing. Demanding lessons in sight-reading in music after choir-reheassatsy lessons in harmony,:; too» Result: -Raising - our de- generating

It is interesting to note that in the analysis of Ukraine’s charge, the Times has clarified the true status of the. Soviet-touted pre sent “independence” of Ukraine, when it flatly states it holds no such right, because, “though the Soviet Constitution grants it (Uk raine) the right to enter into di rect relations with foreign states and to conclude agreements and exchange diplomatic and consular representatives with them, the same Constitution specifically re serves to the highest organs of the Soviet Union not only the representation of the Union in in ternational relations and the con clusion and ratification' of treat ies, but also 4the establishment of the general procedure in the mu tual relations between the Union Republics and foreign states.’ ” In short, Ukraine is not free. EMIL КІШ УСКУ NOTARY PUBLIC REAL) ESTATE, >( ЩЗШАКГСЕ 2231 Fairmount Ave. PHILADELPHIA 30, PA. ENDS CRUCIAL YEAR SUCCESSFULLY Working against time, against discouraging obstacles, fighting apathy and enmity, the Women’s Auxiliary of the United Ukrain ian American 'Relief Committee lias finished the first year’s work in aiding Ukrainian Displaced Persons with shipments of cloth ing. The ladies of this committee, headed iby Mrs. Janet Bencal, have established a praiseworthy record of humanitarian achieve ment among our Ukrainian Americans. Quickly setting up their own system of collection depots ,time schedules, working hours and efficient packing nie.lh- cds, these handful of , ladies have collected, in one short year, more than 100,000 lbs., (750 bales;) of clothing* for Ukrainian D.P.’s. flaking 'into consideration that these ladies are for the most part business >yomen with work ing hours, who also must run their own households, this task can be considered truly heroic. This small New York handful has its counterpart in almost every Ukrainian community in the Eastern States. Small groups of selfless women, who spend hours at this work of collecting, sorting, repairing, yes and even laundering these clothes, all with out pay, of course. Overworked, tired and fully realizing that in every city there are Ukrainian women who could and should help them out — these ladies car ry on their work. As long as there is a Displaced Persons problem, their work- is needed. UNRRA help will cease in December, 1946. Our Ukrainians in all commun ities have been generous with cl/othing and W ith money* but much more help is still needed, as anyone of these elected to the Women’s Auxiliary of the Relief Committee for the next year will tell you: President, Mrs. Janet Bencal, 1st vice-president, Mrs. Mary Demydchuk, 2nd Vice-pres ident, Mrs. E. Lyktey; secretaries N. Blyznak and M. Staleny; Treasurer, A. Bodak; Press, S. Abrahamowska and Controllers, A. Wagner, A. Kmetz and M. Marusevich. enjoyment. A little thing. Sacrificing just an hour’s time to discuss dr plan or serve on your local Ukrainian Relief or Congress Committee. All the one hours'— it's £ big thing. All the little things that lead;to the big things — these we can start in our own little circle of friends, ;ІД our community, at our Rallies and Conventions. And here, is a nice new Labor Day Week-end with which to start. Junior League #ection
