EDITOR, MISS MILDRED MILANOWICZ—151 Hopkins Avenue Jersey City 6, New Jersey Your Far-reaching Influence Ukrainian Junior Leaguers are currently planning this year’s club activities. Undoubtedly, SUA Junior League programs will in clude club participation in affairs that will touch whole spheres of influence and will be international, national, state-wide, community, club, or purely personal in character. When she joins her club’s participation in programs like the Ukrainian American Relief Drive, the March of Dimes, the Red Cross Campaign, the Third Ukrainian-American Congress, Scholar ship Fund Campaigns, Youth Conventions, Church activities, SUA Community affairs, dances, lectures, picnics, etc., — the Ukrainian Junior Leaguer is always conscious of her personal contribution to these far-reaching spheres of influence. In this manner too, s-he is participating in, and contributing to the American Way of Life. A Way of Life that, as explained in a recent speech by Harold E. Stassen: — “contributes to each American’s individual freedoms of thought and action, his strength of character, his happiness and nis human dignity, and contributes at the same time to the steady march of progress of all mankind in a world at Peace.” The purely ^personal gaiit for g. Junior Leaguer from her club activities cannot be measured, for who can measure personal integ rity, self-respect, pride? These things cannot be bought, yet they •can be built up — by being an active SUA membef. FEBRUARY PROGRAM NOTES. This month learn, bf a great courage, a great spirit, and a great heart that overcame heart breaking obstacles to win everlasting fame—'Read the life and works of Lesya Ukrainka, Ukrainian writer and poetess’. MEMORABLE CONCERT MARKS SUA JUBILEE BANQUET .Preceding the 20fh Anniversary Banquet of the Soyuz Ukrainok held in conjunction with its 7th- Conven tion at Philadelphia, Pa., a fine con cent was presented for the enjoyment of the several hundred friends, guests and members attending it. The artistic tone of the concert-was set and adequately maintained by the Philadelphia' Cathedral Choir, in its initial offering. After singing the Na tional Anthem and the Hymn of So yuz Ukrainok, in which all .SUA mem bers joined, the choir gave a moving rendition of De Koven’s Recessional, under the inspired direction of its conductor, Mr. Stephen Marusevich. Remarkable discipline, perfect tim ing and enviable stage-presenoe was obvious in the performance staged next by the children of St. Basil’s Ukrainian Orphanage. The apparent pleasure and pride of the orphans in their various roles on the stage was easily transmitted over the footlights to the audience, who applauded loud ly and long. From the performance of “Children’s Prayer” then through all the intricate figures of the “Lanciers” Dance to the final thrilling pantomime “Ukraine in Bondage” — each or phan —- from the tiniest toddle* to the tallest well-poised Miss, — was perfect and charming in his or her role. The Sisters are to be sincerely congratulated on coaching and stag ing an excellent production. Mrs. Claudia Olesnicki next spoke in Ukrainian on the 20th Jubilee of the SUA. Her address forcibly brought home to every member that this 20tb Jubilee- of the Soyuz Uk rainok, coming in-.a year when Uk raine and Ukrainians have no cause to rejoice, should begin a new period of renewed and doubled effort to help our kinswomen in Ukraine, who had the foresight to organize the first So yuz Ukrainok. Miss Olga Pavlowa, noted Ukrain ian soprano of New York, captivated the Jubilee audience with her singing and her charm. Creating a mood of romance with her singing of W. Bez- korovayny’s “I dream of you,” Miss Pavlowa just а-s masterfully inter preted tflie sorrowful poignancy in, M. Hayvoronsky’s “Little Blue Flow er,” and again the naughty coquetry in “Halia’s Song” from O. Chyzko’s opera “Nazar Stodolia.” Our New York SUA memiber graciously com plied to repeated demands for encores. Her fine performance was comple mented by Miss Olga Dmytriw’s un obtrusive accompaniament. The gifted Kulchycky sisters of Philadelphia followed wiith a cello solo by Miss Eleanor with piano ac companiment by Miss Adelaide. “Solveijg’s Song” by Grieg and Brahm’s “Lullaby” was enjoyed by an appreciative audience. Miss Amelia Bochey, young Junior Leaguer of SUA spoke in English on the SUA Jubilee as a milestone for Junior activities. She clearly enume rated the opportunities, the aims and the ambitions of young SUA mem bers for the immediate future. The concert was concluded with another stirring performance by the Cathedral choir in singing Lysenko’s “Bright Star Falling” and M. Hay- voronsky’s popular “Blacksmith.” JERSEY CITY JUNIOR LEAGUE CAROLS FOR RE LIEF OF UKRAINIAN M VS Fulfilling the first pledge made by them at the first official meeting of the Ukrainian Junior League of Jer sey City, the members went caroling on Sunday, January 6th, to collect funds for the relief of Ukrainian Dis placed Persons in Europe.
