Sec’y R E D CROSS H O M E NU RSING CLASSES Are Farmed For Any 20 Adults Who W ant to Be Trained Man.y serious situations arise in a country involved in war, and health hazards are among the most serious. W-ith so many o-f our medical men and nurses serving the armed forces, it is only natural that there is a short age of doctors and nurses on the home ^ front. ' How many times do we hear a neighbor say “I don’t know what to do until the doctor arrives, if he arrives at all today; he is -so busy with hospital emergencies, office and house calls and my good neighbor who is a nurse is just never at home any 'more.” The anguish brought on by such worries makes 'one almost lose all confidence in one’s abil ity to do the right thing while patiently waiting for the physi cian to arrive. It makes you feel as if “you’re on your own.” As the public well knows, the American Red Cross always comes, across in community emergencies, and offers its pub lic an educational service known as the Home Nursing Course, which the housekeeper certainly “sould take advantage of. We understand of course, that- this home training by no 'means teaches its students to care for serious or complicated illness or to practice nursing elsewhere, but it does provide the knack of nursing intelligently and to im provise in an emergency, when a •member of a family is suffering from an ailment which will re quire complete rest. With so many wounded and nerve-shocked servicemen who will be coming home, our hos pitals may be overcrowded, it is most essential to their mental and physical comeback to be treated understandingly by the family, and one who has at least taken the simple home nursing course will meet such a situation much more easily. The instructor is always a professional nurse, authorized by the American Red Cross, and she , arranges for certain specialized teachers to cover various sub jects on health and a s-imple knowledge of nutrition and diets for the patient. The'Home Nursing Committee of your American Red Cross Chapter has surely been inform ing its public that the course is adaptable to any individual or group who needs instruction on health and -care of the sick. The course has as much valu-fc for the grandmother as it has for the young mother or school-girl and many men who have taken this course have helped in their home situations where the mother be comes bed-ridden. Standard home nursing course classes can be arranged in groups o-f 20 or more adults; high school or college groups, and a Junior Red Cross Home Nursing Course may be arranged for boys and girls in the seventh grade and up and groups such as the Girl Scouts and others. The minimum time in which the course can be completed is 24 hours, (30 hours for school students) at the end of which the Red Cross issues z. certificate to the students who pass the course. An attractive turquoise home nursing pin may be purchased by those students who qualify. A Red Cross certificate gives one a certain satisfaction of be longing to something bigger, a feeling of partnership with an or ganization recognized by all civ ilized nations, an organization which does not have to apologize for its actions, its humanitarian work being known throughout the world. We all know it is the aim of the National Red Cross to teach at least one member in every fa mily this Home Nursing Course to meet emergencies in the home or community, not only in war time, but also in catastrophies during peacetime. Leaders of churches, commun ities and school groups certainly ought to urge the formation of such classes during the after-' noons or evenings. Some S. U. A. branches have active Red Cross production and surgical groups^ and have given their efforts to wards promoting blood-plasma banks, but the educational cours es1 offered by < the American Red Cross, are also valuable towards community progress. It would be of value to our organization if Headquarters had a report on the various Red Cross activities among the S.U.A. branches. Annette L.
