The past few weeks have been filled with unexpected developments that now jeopardize Ukraine’s future and the lives of its people. The UNWLA would like to share a statement regarding the latest pause in military and intelligence aid to Ukraine, as well as the overall dangerous shift in course taken by the current administration. Below, you will find two statements released by the UNWLA that can be used when advocating for Ukraine.
Statement on the meeting between President Trump, Vice President Vance, and President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on February 28, 2025
Ukrainians and Ukrainian-Americans have been and continue to be grateful for the support provided by the United States and have used every opportunity to convey their thanks. The views of the current administration, as expressed during the Oval Office meeting earlier this week and as exemplified by the UN vote in which the United States aligned itself with russia, North Korea and Iran against Ukraine and our allies, do not represent the views of the majority of Americans.
he meeting between President Trump, Vice President Vance and President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on 2.28.2025, was a missed opportunity for the United States to reach an agreement which would serve U.S. national interests, as well as those of Ukraine. The majority of the American people understand that russia is the aggressor and favor continued support for Ukraine. No one wants peace more than Ukrainians, but peace at any cost is not peace. Peace without justice is not peace.
he Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA), implores the administration to realign with Ukraine and our traditional allies, to continue to support Ukraine and to resist a pivot towards russia. Strong leadership from the White House, coupled with security guarantees for Ukraine, can lead to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and will serve to counter the growing threat posed by the alliance of russia, North Korea, Iran and China. Victory for Ukraine is a victory for the United States.
Statement on a “pause” on all military aid to Ukraine
On March 3, 2025, President Trump ordered a “pause” on all military aid to Ukraine, aid which had already been appropriated by Congress and which had been promised to Ukraine in the name of the American people by the then-president of the United States. It is the responsibility of Congress to stand up for our system of checks and balances, in accordance with its Constitutional Article I powers, to demand that the president adhere to the commitments made by the United States and legislation enacted by Congress.
Unilaterally and abruptly ending military aid to Ukraine will not only have a devastating impact on Ukraine, but it erodes the reputation of the United States and destroys the faith that our allies have had in the United States for over 80 years. This is not peace through strength. It does not make America great again. Rather, it only makes the United States look weak and untrustworthy. It empowers and serves the interests of our adversaries: russia, Iran, North Korea and China, to the great detriment of the United States.
To further magnify the effect of its prior actions against our ally Ukraine, on March 5, 2025, the administration paused the sharing of US intelligence with Ukraine. Thus, within the past days and weeks, the administration has stopped humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, military assistance and just today, the critical assistance afforded by intelligence sharing. We cannot stress enough how disastrous a path this is not only for Ukraine but for US security, all to the benefit of russia, and by extension, to Iran, North Korea and China.
The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) calls on the administration to reverse course and restore all of the paused assistance to Ukraine. We implore Congress to act publicly and decisively to support Ukraine and restore military aid, humanitarian aid and intelligence sharing to this embattled ally of the United States. Please prevent the destruction of political norms, foreign relations and alliances, which have served to maintain U.S. security and the stability of the world order since the end of World War II.
