A rm y P h o to g rap h ) RADIO-PROGRAM OF UNW LA REGIONAL COUNCIL IN DETROIT The UNW LA Regional Council of D etroit, Mich.., has started last January a radio-program which has been broadcasting once a m onth ever since. The Radio Committee of the Council has outlined a series of talks on the them e “The W oman in Economic and Domestic Life.” So far there have been six of such radio chats- Each one thoughtfully prepared, was touching upon present day conditions. The first broadcast acquainted the listeners with the activities of organized Ukrainian women, notably with the objectives of the Ukrainian National W om en’s League of America. The next one dealt with the personality of Les sya U krainka and the influence of her works on the Ukrainian spirituality. In M arch the talk was applied to the anniversary of Taras Shev chenko, the greatest poet of U k raine. In April the E aster customs of the Ukrainian people were de scribed; and the May transm is sion was devoted to M other’s Day. The broadcasts are presented in both Ukrainian and English, so as to enable the old as well as the young listeners to grasp well the 'communications. Mrs. Anas- thasiia Volker, the Chairman of the UNW LA Committee on Scholarship, does the announcing. of forced lai^or will appear as a m ajor item on the agenda of the ILO Conference which will -con vene in Geneva in June, 1956- The United States Governm ent will continue to press for appropriate action in that foody. W e have mentioned here the more rem arkable letters out of those we have received. W e may asknowledge that the Free W orld •has already come to comprehend the horror of Soviet misrule. However, we ought to continue to assist the world in procuring more •information and means to combat the evil. ACKNOWLEDGMENT BY ARCHBISHOP OF ENGLAND The Catholic Bishops of E ng land have recently made public their Pastoral L etter in which they condemned the persecution of Church in Soviet Union and warned Great Britain against the visit by Soviet rulers. Commemoration of 500 Brave Women The day of M arch 18 will long be remembered by the Ukrainian women of Boston. On that day the Branch 44 of UNW LA ar ranged a commemoration of 500 women .slave laborers who were tram pled to death under the ar my tanks at Kingiri, in Soviet K azakhstan, because they refus ed to yield to the bolshevik hang men who were torturing their brothers and sisters. We have sent letters and re solutions to all our congressm en in W ashington, also to H enry Ca bot Lodge Jr., our Ambassador to United Nations, and a teleg ram to John F oster Dulles, Sec retary of State, protesting against the crime committed against the subjugated U krain ian and other peoples in the pris on of nations known as Soviet Union- Justine Smarsh, sec’y*
