Who may sponsor?

Individuals, civic clubs, church and other organizations, including UNWLA, Inc. Branches.

May I choose the student I want to sponsor?

You may indicate your preference as to boy or girl, age and country.

May I recommend a student for your program?

No.  We only accept recommendations from trusted educators in the countries where our program exists.

May I choose a candidate for clergy?

Yes, we sponsor theology students and young nuns continuing their studies.

How long before I learn about my student?

After an appropriate student is found, you will be notified by mail.  You will receive name, address, a photograph and a brief family history of your student.

Are academic years the same in South America, Europe and the United States?

No.  In South America, the school year runs from February to December.  In the United States and Europe, the school years run from September to June.

When should donations be sent?

Donations may be made at any time, but will be forwarded to your student only after a student’s application has been processed or renewed and proper documentation has been received by UNWLA Scholarship Program office.  Stipends are awarded at different times of the year, depending in which country your student resides.  You will be notified when your student returns to school and/or if he or she has graduated.

What documents are required from students?

We require the following documents annually:

How will I know that my student received the stipend?

When forwarding your stipend to an assigned student, we notify him of his sponsor.

In turn, the student must write to his/her sponsor and thank for the stipend.

If this does not occur in a timely manner, please notify our office.

Will I be assigned the same student next year?

Yes, as long as your student is continuing his or her studies and sends all the required documents with proper recommendations.  You will be notified if any changes occur in the student’s status.

How long is the student eligible to participate in the program and receive assistance?

In most cases, students are eligible until they complete their studies.  This applies even if there is a change in sponsor.

Does the program include post-graduate studies?

How are the students selected?

First of all, they must be attending school (and document enrollment) and comply with all other requirements.  Priority is given to the needy:  orphans, abandoned children, children with guardians, children from large families or single-parents, households, children in foster homes, and/or disadvantaged children who are good students. All other candidates will be considered according to economic need.

Do you send stipends to orphanages and/or educational institutions?

No.   Stipends from our program are intended for individual students not institutions.

What percentage of the contributions received are designated for administrative costs?

Our administrative costs are approximately 10 percent, and we are able to maintain this low percentage because all UNWLA Scholarship Program Committee members, including the committee chairwoman, are volunteers.  For this reason, we encourage donors to consider contributing for our administrative costs as well.
